DUNE (First Album)

Dune is the debut album of L'Arc-en-Ciel. It was originally released in a limited edition on April 10, 1993, the regular edition, which contained an additional track, being made available on April 27 of the same year. A tenth anniversary edition was released on April 21, 2004. It was remastered and contained three bonus tracks.

Yukihiro's Profile

Yukihiro Awaji (淡路 幸宏, Awaji Yukihiro), known professionaly as yukihiro, is the drummer and remixer of the Japanese rock band L’Arc~en~Ciel as well as the leader of Acid Android. His nickname is “Yukky”(or “Yukkie”) as well as “teacher”.He joined L’Arc~en~Ciel in 1998, taking over the former drummer, Sakura. yukihiro is very skinny (it has been reported his weight is only 48 kg) . He composed a few songs for L’Arc~en~Ciel, including “trick”, “cradle”, “Revelation” and “New World”. He is also known for his remixing works of the band, and released the remix album, “ectomorphed works” in 2000. He had been a member of some other Japanese rock bands, including Die in Cries and Zi:Kill.

Early life

Yukihiro was born on November 24, 1968 in Chiba, near Tokyo. His father is a company worker, and his mother is a kimono-wearing instructor. He has a younger sister. Yukihiro has stated that he had as ordinary a childhood as any other Japanese kid, never questioning his destined path of going to school, graduating to a university, and ultimately becoming a white-collar salaryman. But he loved music, both Japanese and American, from Heavy Metal to Pop music. He was also a good short-track athlete in junior high school. However, he was fired from his athletics club for his sabotaging of daily training.When he entered high school, he started to play the drums and immediately decided to be a professional rock drummer. Once he made the decision, he told his parents that he was leaving school because it was of no use to him. His parents forbade this. Thus, he continued his education while devoting himself mostly to rock music. During his university days (he is a graduate of The Chiba University of Commerce), he joined Zi:Kill, one of the rising j-rock groups at that time.

Joined with L'Arc~en~Ciel

When it was announced that the former L'Arc drummer Sakura quit the band in 1997, tetsu, the leader of the band, asked yukihiro to help record the new single, via their common friends. During that time, they had a good chemistry between them. His unique rhythm track was accepted in the song. When their first come-back single "Niji(虹)" was released and did the comeback concert "Reincarnation in Tokyo Dome", yukihiro was still a support member. It is in 1998 when the band announced yukihiro as official member with the new album "HEART".
Despite of some arguments from sakura's fans, yukihiro quickly got acclimatized to L'Arc. His first song, "a swell in the sun", was played as a prologue during the 1998 tour ハートに火をつけろ！Light My Fire. L'Arc~en~Ciel became one of the most popular bands, that which all of them have never expected. The hall tour was sold out, the album got platinum disk. The band rushed to release the seven new singles and hit the top 10 charts, every month.
On July 1, 1999, they released their sixth and seventh albums "ark" and "ray" on the same day. They began the a concert tour named the Grand-Cross Tour. The album hit the top two ranks, and the tour was huge success.
In 2000, they released new album, "Real". yukihiro wrote "get out from the shell-English version", while "Japanese version" was c/w of "STAY AWAY". However,L'Arc~en~Ciel had stopped their project until 2003,"Shibuya Seven Days" concert. Each member started their solo projects. yukihiro also started his solo project, Acid Android. He sang as a lead singer, firstly.

Equipment

He is an endorser of Pearl drums, pedals and hardware, Sabian cymbals (mostly from the HH and AA series) and Remo drumheads (mostly from the Emperor series), like Sakura. He uses two double bass drum kits, with different set ups. He has his own signature 13x3.5" snare drum made by Pearl. He has also played his kit with Remo rototoms.

Ken's Profile

Ken Kitamura (北村 健, Kitamura Ken), known professionaly as ken, was born in Shiga, Japan on November 28, 1968. He is the guitarist of L’Arc~en~Ciel, a Japanese rock band. He is also the leader/guitarist/vocalist of his own band Sons Of All Pussys or S.O.A.P and solo album Speed.Two months before his graduation, Ken dropped out of The Nagoya Institute of Technology (one of Japan’s top schools in this field), where he was an architect major to join L’Arc~en~Ciel (ラルク アン シエル), or L’Arc or Laruku (ラルク), in 1992 at the request of his childhood friend Tetsuya Ogawa (aka Tetsu the bassist). It’s rumored that as a result of this Ken’s relationship with his parents turned sour. He has written multiple songs for L’Arc~en~ciel, including, but not limited to: “As If In A Dream”, “Vivid Colors”, “Niji”, “The Fourth Avenue Café, “Shout At The Devil”, “Kasou”, “Lies and Truth”, “Lover Boy”, and “Twinkle Twinkle”. Today he is known as one of the best guitarists in Japan.In 2002 Ken’s own band, S.O.A.P, became active as a result of a break in L’Arc~en~Ciel’s activities, with ex-L’Arc~en~Ciel member Yasunori Sakurazawa (Sakura) as the drummer, and Ein as the bassist (a half japanese/german model who appears in a few L’Arc PVs). Each member contributed songs based on themes; Ken with love, Ein with Desire, and Sakura with his experiences in jail, and together they shelled out four albums; Grace, Gimme A Guitar, High! and Paradise. All S.O.A.P. activities have ceased since 2004. On 23.08.2006 Ken released a solo album titled “Speed”, referring to himself as just Ken and has taken a new, “clean” appearance similar to his early days with L’Arc~en~Ciel.

Tetsu's Profile

Tetsuya Ogawa (born October 3, 1969, in Osaka, Japan), known professionally as tetsu, is the leader and bassist of the Japanese rock band L’Arc~en~Ciel. He also does backup vocals and has written some of the band’s songs, including ‘Link’, ‘READY STEADY GO’, ‘finale’, ‘Driver’s High’ and ‘Pieces’. In the band, his name is ‘tetsu’ (All in lower case).Since 2001, he had solo work under the name ‘TETSU69′ (Number 69 is his birth year). As of 26th November 2006 he changed his solo name to ‘tetsu’.

Playing Style

Tetsu is renowned for his melodic style of bass playing. Many of L'Arc~en~Ciel's songs involve Tetsu playing counter melodies with ken (guitarist of L'Arc~en~Ciel) while still holding a groove with the drums. Tetsu's songwriting can be seen as more 'poppish' as compared to ken's who has a heavier and sometimes bluesy approach. Slides and hammer-ons/pull offs are frequently used in his playing.
Tetsu plays with a pick most of the time, but uses fingerstyle occasionally when the song calls for it, like in 'winter fall' and 'jojoushi'. In a few songs Tetsu can be heard using the slap style of playing such as in the Laruku song 'THE NEPENTHES' and 'twinkle, twinkle'. Tetsu has also used distortion such as in the song 'STAY AWAY.' Tetsu has also been known to play briefly with a banana (which he whips to the audience afterwards) prior to the beginning of a song in some concerts.
Tetsu primarily plays a 4 string bass, but is known to occasionally use 6 strings in L'Arc~en~Ciel songs such as Neo Universe, Time Goes on, Perfect Blue, etc. Recently, he has switched to 5 strings which he also used in his side project Creature Creature.Even though Tetsu is endorsed by ESP Guitars and has several models, he used his Zon bass for most of his recording works. Tetsu is an avid collector of basses and guitars. He owns over 120 basses and more than 20 guitars.

Hyde (Pronounced in Japanese: Hai-do, or in English as "Hide", b. January 29, 1969, in Wakayama, Japan) is the singer for the Japanese rock band band L'Arc~en~Ciel. Since Hyde keeps his personal information secret, much about him is either unknown or unofficial (including his real name, which is rumored to be Hideto Takarai, and his birthdate). He joined L'Arc~en~Ciel in 1991 after leaving another band called Jerusalem's Rod where he was the guitarist.
In addition to being the lead singer and main lyricist of L'Arc~en~Ciel, Hyde has solo projects, as well as his own record label under Sony Japan called Haunted Records.In 2000, Hyde married model Megumi Oishi; they have one son together.

History of L'Arc~en~Ciel

Semua bermula dari tetsu, yang ingin membentuk band di era band-booming saat itu. Bersama temannya ken, ia sempat membentuk bystonwell. Setelah bystonwell bubar, ia lalu membentuk band lain bersama hiro. Suatu hari tetsu melihat penampilan band lain bernama Jerusalem Rod, yang beranggotakan antara lain hyde sebagai gitaris, dan pero sebagai drummer. Melihat penampilannya, tetsu terpikat dan lalu mengajak hyde bergabung sebagai vokalis. hyde setuju, asalkan ia boleh membawa pero. Ketika itu, mereka melakukan session di Sub-Rock dan kemudian mereka setuju membentuk group band. Dan terbentuklah L'Arc~en~Ciel di Osaka pada Februari 1991 dengan formasi awal tetsu [bass], hyde [vokal], hiro [gitar] dan pero [drum]. Nama L'Arc~en~Ciel (yang berarti pelangi) dipilih oleh sang leader tetsu.

Nama itu berasal dari nama film prancis yang ditonton tetsu sebelumnya. Ia memilih nama itu hanya karena nama itu kedengarannya keren. Aneh kan?Mereka lalu mengadakan LIVE pertamanya di Nanba Rockets pada 30 Mei 1991. Karena corak musiknya yang unik, mereka dengan cepat mengumpulkan banyak fans sehingga mereka makin sibuk manggung di daerah Osaka dan sekitarnya. Mereka bahkan sempat merekam video L'Arc~en~Ciel yang berisikan rekaman LIVE mereka di Nanba Rockets. Video ini terdiri dari 2 lagu, Claustrophobia dan I'm in pain.Di tengah kesibukan tersebut, sang gitaris Hiro memutuskan keluar dari band pada 12 Juni 1991. Mereka lalu kebingungan karena mereka membutuhkan gitaris untuk bisa terus manggung. Ketika itu tetsu teringat pada Ken. Ken saat itu sedang menyelesaikan kuliahnya di Universitas Nagoya jurusan arsitektur. Setelah menerima tawaran dari tetsu, Ken berpikir selama 3 hari dan ia lalu memutuskan cabut dari kuliahnya untuk bergabung dengan Laruku. Tetapi ternyata orangtua Ken sangat marah dengan keputusan ini, dan konon mereka masih tidak saling bicara sampai saat ini.

Ken lalu memulai LIVE pertamanya bersama Laruku di Shinjuku Loft pada 25 Juni 1991. Pada 1 Oktober, Laruku merekam Voice untuk dimasukkan dalam CD kompilasi Gimmick. 1 bulan kemudian, tepatnya 25 November, mereka merilis single pertamanya Flood of Tears (c/w Yasouka) dan hanya tersedia 1000 kopi saja.Tapi ternyata jalan mereka belum terlalu mulus. Pada 30 Desember 1992, setelah LIVE di Osaka Music Hall, Pero ikut hengkang. Sekali lagi, Laruku kelabakan. Untungnya, Tetsu melihat seorang drummer jempolan bernama Sakura di sebuah live house di Tokyo. Tetsu yang kagum akan permainan Sakura langsung mengajaknya bergabung, padahal mereka belum saling mengenal (apalagi mengingat jarak antara Osaka dan Tokyo yang cukup jauh). Sakura yang penasaran dengan Laruku akhirnya pergi ke Osaka untuk melihat band tersebut. Akhirnya pada 16 Januari 1993, Sakura resmi bergabung dengan Laruku.

Pada bulan April 1993, mereka merilis album perdana mereka yang berjudul DUNE. Pada 31 Mei DUNE akhirnya menduduki posisi puncak Oricon Indies chart. Pada bulan september, single Yokan diikutkan dalam omnibus The Monsters of Shock Age. Demi mengejar popularitas, mereka akhirnya pindah ke Tokyo, walaupun sebenarnya hyde kurang setuju dengan kepindahan merka tersebut. Mereka kemudian merilis video pertamanya, Touch of Dune pada 21 Oktober.Pada medio '94, mereka akhirnya meninggalkan label indie dan bergabung dengan Ki/oon Record (anak perusahaan Sony). Bersama Ki/oon, mereka merilis single video Nemuri ni Yosete pada 1 Juli, sementara album Tierra dirilis 2 minggu kemudian, sekaligus mengawali tur Sense of Time '94. Pada 9-20 September, mereka berkunjung ke Maroko untuk rekaman video SIESTA, yang kemudian dirilis 1 Desember. Sementara single pertama mereka bersama Ki/oon, Blurry Eyes dirilis 21 Oktober. Single ini menjadi OST dari anime DNA2.Pada tanggal 1 Desember pula, pendaftaran untuk official fansclub Ciel dibuka. Para anggotanya mendapatkan majalah bulanan Ciel. Pada majalah Ciel vol.0, terdapat bonus jam tangan 'Ciel'.

Pada 21 Mei 1995, mereka merilis single video And She Said, juga sekaligus memulai tur "in CLUB 95" dimana mereka berkeliling jepang sejauh 15.407 km sambil mengadakan 19 kali konser di livehouse/club yang merka lalui. Single Vivid Colors kemudian dirilis pada 6 Juli, dan kemudian album heavenly pada 1 September. Pada 22 September, untuk pertama kalinya mereka tampil di Music Station dengan membawakan lagu Vivid Colors. Single Natsu no Yuutsu [time to say good-bye] dirilis pada 21 Oktober, dan puncaknya adalah Tour Heavenly '95 yang finalnya diadakan di Tokyo Dome, dimana 10166 tiket terjual habis dalam 28 menit.Tahun 1996 mungkin adalah salah satu tahun tersibuk bagi Laruku. Dimulai pada 21 Maret dengan video heavenly~films dan photobook pertama mereka, heavenly photographs. Tur "kiss me deadly x heavenly" dimulai bulan April, dimana tetsu sempat sakit sehingga konser sempat ditunda.

Akhirnya finale tour tersebut, "kiss me deadly x heavenly '96 REVENGE" diadakan di NHK Hall pada 26 Mei. Pada 8 Juli, single Kaze ni Kienaide dirilis, kemudian disusul buku biografi mereka yang terlengkap, "IS" pada 20 September. Single flower dirilis 17 oktober, dan disusul single Lies and Truth pada 12 November. Akhirnya album True dirilis pada 12 Desember dan kemudian mereka memulai tur Carnival of True pada 23 Desember. Album True sendiri merupakan album Laruku pertama yang terjual sebanyak 1 juta kopi.Sayangnya pada Februari ’97 Sakura ditahan polisi karena kasus kepemilikan Narkoba. Hal ini tentu saja sangat menggangu aktivitas Laruku. Peluncuran single the Fourth Avenue cafe juga terpaksa dibatalkan. Akan tetapi Laruku memutuskan untuk terus jalan walaupun kini mereka hanya bertiga. Sakura akhirnya dihukum 2 tahun penjara dan ia resmi meninggalkan Laruku pada 4 Nov ’97.

Seperti biasa, Tetsu kemudian mencari pengganti Sakura dan ia lalu melihat Yukihiro yang merupakan mantan drummer DIE IN CRIES. Ia lalu merekrutnya sebagai supporting drummer dan Laruku mulai aktif kembali secara resmi pada 27 Agustus. Single pertama mereka setelah re-start, Niji dirilis pada 17 Oktober. Reincarnation Live ’97 di Tokyo Dome menandai kembalinya kesuksesan Laruku. LIVE ini bahkan memecahkan rekor penjualan tiket di Tokyo Dome. Dengan hanya 4 menit, 56.000 lembar tiket telah terjual habis.Pada 1 Januari ’98 Yukihiro secara resmi bergabung dengan Laruku. Masuknya Yukihiro membawa angin segar pada corak musik Laruku. Mereka lalu terus merilis hit, seperti single winter fall pada 28 Januari dan album HEART pada 25 Februari. Single DIVE TO BLUE dirilis 25 Maret, dan tur Light My Fire diadakan pada bulan Mei. disusul video A PIECE OF REINCARNATION pada 22 April.

Lalu pada 8 Juli mereka merilis 3 single sekaligus yaitu HONEY, Kasou, dan Shinshoku lose control dan hal ini merupakan pertama kalinya dalam sejarah. Pada 27 Juli, untuk pertama kalinya dalam sejarah pula, single HONEY dan Shinshoku berturut-turut menempati posisi 1 dan 2 di Oricon chart. Shinsoku juga dimasukkan ke dalam OST movie Godzila (khusus versi asia). Menyusul kesuksesan HONEY, single snow drop dirilis pada 7 Oktober dan single forbidden lover seminggu kemudian. Kemudian pada malam tahun baru mereka akhirnya berkesempatan tampil di acara Kouhaku Utagassen dengan single 'HONEY' yang telah terjual 1 juta kopi.Memasuki tahun 1999, Laruku terlihat makin sibuk. Photobook LIVE yang merupakan kumpulan foto mereka dalam live dirilis pada 20 Januari. Sementara Photobook LIFE yang berisi foto-foto mereka saat berada di mancanegara dirilis sebulan kemudian. Mereka lalu merilis single HEAVEN'S DRIVE pada 21 April dan Pieces pada 2 Juni.

Pada 1 Juli mereka merilis 2 album ark dan ray secara serempak di beberapa negara di asia. Untuk menyambut 2 album ini, diluncurkanlah situs spesial www.arkray.com yang hanya aktif selama 26 hari saja. Sementara itu tiket tur nasional Grand Cross Tour ’99 terjual 650.000 lembar. Single Driver's High dan video chronicles dirilis pada 11 Agustus. Driver's high kemudian dijadikan OST dari anime GTO. Single LOVE FLIES dirilis pada 27 Oktober, bersamaan dengan peluncuran website LArcom.net. Pada malam tahun baru, mereka tampil kembali di acara Kouhaku Utagassen untuk yang kedua kalinya dengan membawakan single HEAVEN'S DRIVE.Laruku menyambut millennium baru dengan merilis double side single NEO UNIVERSE/finale dan situs LArc-en-Ciel.com. Sementara itu, nama fansklub 'Ciel' diganti menjadi 'Le-Ciel'. Album remix yukihiro 'ectomorphed works' dirilis 28 Juni., single STAY AWAY pada 19 Juli dan album REAL pada 30 Agustus. Mereka juga mengadakan 2 tur, yakni CLUB CIRCUIT 2000 REALIVE dimana mereka manggung di klab-klab kecil untuk dapat melihat reaksi fans mereka lebih dekat, dan TOUR 2000 REAL yang diadakan di stadion-stadion besar. Dan mereka (lagi-lagi) tampil di acara Kouhaku Utagassen pada malam tahun baru untuk yang ketiga kalinya dengan membawakan single STAY AWAY.

Menyambut 10 tahun eksistensi mereka di dunia musik, pada 2001 mereka memutuskan untuk vakum untuk sementara dan memulai proyek solo karir mereka. Praktis, setelah single Spirit dreams inside -another dream-, Laruku tidak mempunyai kegiatan apa-apa lagi. Mereka lalu berkonsentrasi penuh pada solo karirnya. Tetsu sebagai TETSU69 memulai dengan single wonderful world/tightrope, lalu menyusul Hyde dengan single evergreen . Yukihiro tak mau ketinggalan dan membentuk band Acid Android yang membawakan lagu bercorak rock-industrial. Akhirnya ken membentuk Sons of all Pussys (S.O.A.P) dimana ia reuni dengan mantan drummer laruku, Sakura.

Hingga 2003, para fans mulai khawatir dengan gosip akan bubarnya Laruku. Apalagi dengan dirilisnya trilogi album The Best, membuat hati fans makin kebat-kebit. Tetapi laruku menampik gosip tersebut dengan konser Shibuya Seven Days 2003 dan memulai kembali aktivitas mereka sebagai band dengan dirilisnya single READY STEADY GO. Album SMILE kemudian menebar senyuman di kalangan fans. Merka lalu berkesempatan mengadakan konser pertamanya di Amerika dalam acara OTAKON 2004. Kini mereka masih terus berkarya dan berusaha memberikan yang terbaik untuk para fans mereka di seluruh dunia. Tahun 2005, Laruku merilis 3 single, yaitu Killing Me, New World, dan Joujoushi. Ketiganya masuk dalam album Awake yang dirilis 22 Juni. Laruku pun merilis single Link pada 20 Juli 2005.

Usai konser AWAKE Tour, Laruku langsung melanjutkan dengan konser ASIA LIVE 2005 tour di Korea (Seoul) dan China (Shanghai). Tour ini ditutup di Tokyo Dome, Jepang. Setelah itu mereka kembali dengan solo project-nya masing-masing. Tetsu mulai rekaman dengan band barunya, Creature-Creature dan me-remake namanya menjadi tetsu (tanpa tambahan 69). Yukihiro kembali bergabung dengan Acid Android. Ia merilis single Let’s Dance pada 5 April, kemudian bergabung dengan band rock MUCC untuk konser bareng sebanyakl dua kali di Shanghai, China (April 2006).
